It is a crystalline ionic solid with a very bright, red-orange colour. The salt is 20 times more soluble in water than Potassium Dichromate
It has also been used in pyrotechnics and for the tanning of leather, Sodium Dichromate is first reduced with Sulphur Dioxide.
